Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working at the crossroads of science, community, and policy — all with a shared goal: protecting our oceans and supporting the people who depend on them.
My journey started with hands-on research, studying fish stocks, marine biodiversity, and the health of coastal ecosystems in the Red Sea region. As a research assistant at the Red Sea Fisheries Research Station, I was deeply involved in field surveys, laboratory analysis, and tagging projects that helped monitor fish populations and migration patterns. This early exposure shaped my appreciation for data-driven conservation.
Later, I took on roles that combined technical leadership with broader development goals. As a Fisheries Consultant for Somalia’s Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy, I supported national efforts to shape fisheries policies and sustainable aquaculture strategies. My work focused on aligning local realities with international standards and helping build frameworks for long-term ocean stewardship.
With DT-Global and the USAID/UKaid IRiS Project, I had the chance to contribute to large-scale resilience initiatives. My role involved supporting coastal communities in building sustainable livelihoods, especially in the face of climate stressors. I helped design fisheries management systems that are not only environmentally sound but also practical and community-driven. A key part of this work was conducting training programs and capacity-building workshops — empowering local fishers and government teams with the tools they need to protect their resources.
More recently, I’ve been part of the Marine Research and Coastal Development Center, where I provide technical expertise on both environmental issues and fisheries management. My focus here is integrating scientific knowledge with policymaking and community engagement, helping shape a more inclusive and resilient approach to marine governance.
Throughout my career, I’ve valued collaboration. I’ve worked closely with a diverse range of partners — from small fishing cooperatives and local NGOs to international organizations and government ministries. Together, we've conducted environmental impact assessments, created marine protected area proposals, and developed monitoring programs for marine health and biodiversity.
I’m also deeply committed to lifelong learning and global cooperation. I've attended and contributed to international conferences and training programs in South Korea, China, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, and Japan. These experiences have allowed me to exchange ideas with fellow scientists, learn about cutting-edge marine technologies, and advocate for African voices in global ocean conversations.
As a certified Advanced Open Water Diver, I also enjoy getting below the surface — literally. I’ve conducted underwater surveys, reef monitoring dives, and community awareness dives, all with the aim of blending science with real-world understanding.
Whether I’m writing technical reports, mentoring youth through the Africa SDGs Programme, or sharing insights with international partners, I approach every task with a sense of purpose and a deep respect for the ocean and the communities that depend on it.
