Job Type
Operational Support (technical)
Subject Area
Marine Geology, Geophysics
Activities
A topographic engineer in oceanography and marine geophysics projects performs various activities. First, it conducts underwater topographic surveys to map the relief of the seabed and identify geological features. In addition, it is in charge of positioning and navigation, using global positioning systems (GPS) and navigation technology to determine the precise coordinates of points of interest at sea. In addition, the survey engineer installs and maintains specialized measuring instruments, such as current meters and pressure sensors. Another important task is the acquisition of data, which includes taking samples of water, sediments or plankton, as well as the deployment of measurement equipment on the seabed.
Once the data has been collected, the topographic engineer handles its processing and analysis using specialized software. This involves the generation of three-dimensional models and maps of the seabed, bathymetric profiles and current data. In addition, he participates in the supervision and monitoring of marine projects, verifying the quality of the data and ensuring compliance with technical and security requirements.
Finally, the topographic engineer prepares technical reports and presents the results obtained during the projects in a clear and effective way. These reports summarize the findings and conclusions, providing valuable information to clients and collaborators. In summary, the activities of a surveying engineer in oceanography and marine geophysics projects encompass underwater surveying, positioning, data acquisition and analysis, project supervision, and communication of results.
