Dr. Neffa Mounsef is an Associate Professor in Environmental Biotechnology at the Faculty of Sciences, Mohammed I University (UMP), Oujda, Morocco. He holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Environmental Process Engineering from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology in Marrakech.
Dr. Mounsef is a multidisciplinary researcher whose work focuses on sustainable solutions for marine and aquatic ecosystems, bridging bioprocess engineering, nanotechnology, and circular bioeconomy. He leads several applied research projects addressing marine pollution and resource recovery, with a particular focus on the valorization of marine biomass (macroalgae, microalgae, and organic residues) through anaerobic digestion, thermochemical treatments, and the extraction of high-value bioactive compounds for use in agriculture and biotechnology.
His expertise includes the remediation of marine pollution caused by microplastics and hydrocarbons, developing algae-based biosorbents and functionalized nanocomposites to remove emerging contaminants from coastal and estuarine waters. He also advances low-cost biopurification systems and bioaugmentation strategies to treat wastewater and industrial effluents, aiming to reduce pollutant loads into marine ecosystems.
In parallel, Dr. Mounsef explores the use of microalgae and digestate-derived biofertilizers to support ecological restoration of degraded coastal zones and promote nature-based solutions in line with sustainable development goals. His group collaborates on national and Euro-Mediterranean programs (e.g., PRIMA, Horizon Europe & Erasmus+) dedicated to marine ecosystem resilience, aquaculture sustainability, and the blue bioeconomy.
With a strong commitment to applied science and coastal stewardship, Dr. Mounsef’s work contributes to the understanding and mitigation of anthropogenic pressures on marine biodiversity, supporting both scientific advancement and community-driven environmental management in North Africa, MENA region & Africa.
