Activities
Collaborative working: Bringing together monitoring and reporting work for the European Water Framework Directive (WFD: water quality legislation) and Habitats, Species and Birds Directives (habitat and species conservation legislation) in the marine environment of Wales. Ensure, where possible, surveys, analysis and reporting is undertaken collaboratively in areas covered by multiple marine environmental legislation.
Project Management: Management of the marine macroinvertebrate and sediment monitoring for Welsh Marine Protected Areas and WFD water bodies. Management of invertebrate analysis contracts (exceeding £100,000 annually) and coordination and lead offshore sediment surveys around Wales. NRW representative for National Marine Biological Analytical Quality Control Committee and oversight of marine ecological data quality assurance within NRW.
Reporting: Collation of ecological data, undertaking multivariate and univariate statistical analysis, report writing, GIS, conservation advice and involvement in reporting results to the UK Joint Nature Conservation Committee and the European Union. Reports are used for statutory reporting, Marine Protected Area management and information dissemination to stakeholders.
Advice: Sitting on multiple agency working groups and giving monitoring advice to various private and public organisations. Coordination of responses for various nature agency marine environmental reports and contribution to advice on EIAs and industry monitoring reports.
Field work: Leading and undertaking regular sand bank, bay, estuary and lagoon macro invertebrate and sediment surveys around Wales. A key team member and scientific diver supervisor of the NRW marine monitoring scientific dive team.
Skills
15 years of multidisciplinary experience of professional marine ecology, marine survey, field, species identification and laboratory work, data analysis, report authorship, project management, MPA monitoring and research.
In depth knowledge of european nature designation from professional and academic experience.
Skilled in multivariate and univariate analysis, scientific writing and GIS.
HSE Scientific SCUBA diver, Seasearch tutor, commercially qualified advanced powerboat skipper and professional underwater photography experience.
