The varied positions I’ve held throughout my career have allowed me to form close working relationships with scientists from a variety of ocean science disciplines, learning how to “speak” and communicate their research to a general audience, which I feel is a vitally important skill.
Moreover, in my recent position as Outreach Manager for the Bermuda Ocean Prosperity Programme, I was responsible for writing a large portion of the Marine Spatial Plan, which involved understanding data analyses; communicating these data to a non-scientific audience; working with GIS specialists to develop map-based products that could be easily understood and interpreted by the general public; and using current data and peer-reviewed literature to justify the spatial and non spatial objectives of the Marine Spatial Plan, as well as the management decisions contained within them.
I’m a certified sustainability consultant and am currently using this to do consulting work with the Bermuda Tourism Authority, advising on the development of an “Sustainability on Islands” module for a City&Guilds program. I’m also using this knowledge,
combined with my background in marine science and marketing, to pivot into regenerative tourism, as this not only supports multiple SDGs and UN Ocean Decade Challenges, but would help Bermuda build its blue economy.
