Retired. Martin was the manager of the Southern African Data Centre for Oceanography, containing virtually all physical oceanographic data off the coast of southern Africa (south of 10 deg N). Martin was also managing AfrOBIS, the sub-Saharan node of OBIS. Also manager of the extensive data holdings of the CSIR in the marine environment. Consulting experience for oil companies, offshore structures, hindcasting for maritime incidents. Research interest: oceanographic features and application in the Indian and Atlantic oceans, making use of hydrographic measurements, remote sensing (including altimetry), historic data.
