Ecotoxicological Training | Cefas, UK
Received advanced training at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas), UK, in Microtox® solid-phase assays for sediment toxicity testing, quality assurance, and data interpretation.
2023 – Present
MPhil Research | University of Cape Coast (UCC), Ghana
Conducting research on the applicability of Microtox® assays for coastal pollution assessment in Ghana. The study integrates ecotoxicology, heavy metal analysis (ICP-MS/OES), and coastal water quality monitoring.
2023 – Present
OCPP Scholar | Ocean Country Partnership Programme (UKRI/ACU)
Awarded scholarship under the UK-funded OCPP, focused on marine environmental protection, research capacity development, and sustainable ocean governance.
2021 – 2023
Research Support | HOTSPOT Project (DANIDA/DTU)
Contributed to the DANIDA-funded HOTSPOT project on coastal pollution in Ghana through field sampling, laboratory analysis, and environmental monitoring.
2020 – 2023
Laboratory Coordinator, Ghana | One Ocean Hub (UKRI/GCRF)
Participated in interdisciplinary research on marine governance, pollution assessment, and stakeholder engagement under the One Ocean Hub initiative led by the University of Strathclyde.
2022
Conference Presentation | SETAC Africa
Presented ecotoxicological findings at the 11th Biennial SETAC Africa Conference, Accra, highlighting Microtox® applications in environmental risk assessment.
2020 – present
Laboratory Technologist | Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, UCC
Provided technical support in aquatic toxicology, analytical chemistry, and marine science education; managed laboratory operations and help in implementing laboratory protocols and laboratory quality management systems (LQMS).
Skills
Albert Koomson possesses strong interdisciplinary skills in environmental monitoring, ecotoxicology, and coastal resource management. He is proficient in laboratory techniques including Microtox bioassays, heavy metal analysis (ICP-MS/OES), water and sediment quality assessment, plastic pollution analyses (micro, meso and macroplastics) and biological health indicators in aquatic organisms. He has experience with laboratory quality management systems (LQMS), environmental impact assessments, data analysis , and scientific communication. Albert also demonstrates competence in research design, field sampling, and stakeholder engagement within marine and coastal contexts.
Comment(s)
Albert Koomson is an MPhil student in Integrated Coastal Zone Management at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. With a strong background as a Laboratory Technologist at the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences and the Centre for Coastal Management, he supports research and capacity development in marine and environmental sciences. His research focuses on ecotoxicology, particularly the application of the Microtox bioassay for assessing environmental pollutants in Ghanaian coastal ecosystems. He has received international training under the Ocean Country Partnership Programme (OCPP) at Cefas, Lowestoft, UK and actively contributes to coastal monitoring, environmental impact assessments, and marine sustainability initiatives. Albert is committed to advancing interdisciplinary research that supports ocean governance, pollution mitigation, and sustainable coastal development.
