Member of the American Chemical Society (ACS), Challenger Society for Marine Science (CSMS) and Scottish Alliance for Geoscience Environment and Society (SAGES). Currently involved in the joint supervision of PhD student Kuei-Chen Chang (National Sun Yat-sen University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan) who is studying aquatic exports from peat catchments. Currently examining the behaviour and fate of humic colloids of terrestrial origin in the coastal environment of North Scotland. Course coordinator, Environmental Chemistry (DP4Y 34), University of the Highlands and Islands.
Skills
Chemical speciation of trace metals in seawater, with emphasis on transport processes.
Biological control on seawater chemistry, and resulting feedbacks between the chemistry of trace metals and their biological utilisation.
Characterisation of estuarine colloids, their fate in the coastal zone and their interactions with trace metals.
Comment(s)
Would be very much interested in collaborating with sub-Arctic region partners (Finland, Estonia, Russia) to find out the extent to which the River Thurso plume (Scotland) can be used as an analogue of much larger and globally more significant sources of terrestrial carbon and iron to the ocean.
