Activities
My research activities focus on the environmental monitoring of coastal ecosystems through the integration of remote sensing, spectral analysis, and geospatial processing tools. My work emphasizes the early detection, characterization, and spatiotemporal analysis of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in coastal regions of the Mexican Pacific, with particular emphasis on Mazatlán Bay.
I integrate high-resolution multispectral satellite imagery, particularly from the Sentinel-2 sensor, with in situ observations to assess water quality, estimate chlorophyll concentrations, and analyze HAB dynamics. To achieve this, I employ spectral indices, statistical analysis, and machine learning techniques aimed at developing early warning tools that support coastal environmental management and decision-making.
Complementarily, I use unmanned aerial systems (drones) to support satellite data validation and to document HAB events at local scales, strengthening data interpretation and high-resolution monitoring capabilities.
Additionally, I work on the development of spectral signature libraries derived from HAB events and microalgae cultures, with the aim of improving the discrimination of algal communities and enhancing future remote sensing applications for coastal monitoring.
These activities align with thematic areas such as coastal and marine ecosystem monitoring, ocean Earth observation, marine biodiversity, and the development of technological innovations for environmental sustainability.
