Nick is an ocean leader, policy specialist, marine scientist and former diplomat who has been working at the interface of ocean, climate and nature action for three decades. He founded Re:Blue Consulting to provide strategic ocean advisory services to help organisations position ocean sustainability initiatives for investment and impact.
Formerly, Nick led the Blue Climate team at Conservation International, developing strategies for conservation of coastal nature-based climate solutions across 30 countries. Prior to this, he was Head of Ocean and Natural Resources at The Commonwealth Secretariat, where he launched the flagship Commonwealth Blue Charter and Sustainable Energy Programmes and the Apia Commonwealth Ocean Declaration. He has research affiliations as Adjunct professor at the University of Western Australia and as a Fellow of the Marine Biological Association of the UK.
Nick has extensively developed and led large (multi-agency) programmes, teams and Centres of Excellence, including at Board and Director level. His research on projects in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and Oceania, has taken him into all five of the major ocean basins.
Nick's biogeochemical and oceanographic research has been targeted around global challenges such as food security, climate change and ocean acidification, as well as linking to a range of industry applications such as oil spill monitoring, carbon capture and storage (CCS) and marine carbon valuation ('blue carbon'). His research has had a strong focus on ocean observing and information systems, blending a range of approaches from satellite observations to autonomous ocean instruments and modelling, to address challenges in carbon sequestration, fisheries and climate.
Nick has published extensively, authoring over 150 research papers, book chapters, articles, industry and government reports. He has contributed to a wide range of international committees and steering groups, including as an adviser to The Earthshot Prize, the G20 Coral Reef Research and Development Accelerator (CORDAP), the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance (ORRAA), the Indian Ocean Regional Panel of the UN Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) / World Climate Research Program (WCRP), Global Biogeochemical Argo, the Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCCAT) and the International Ocean Colour Coordination Group (IOCCG).
