Geologist, United States Geological Survey, and affiliate professor, University of Washington. Brian used coastal geology to help discover earthquake and tsunami hazards from subduction in the Cascadia region of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California. That work included comparative studies in Alaska, Chile, and Japan. Since the 2004 tsunami, Brian has worked on Indian Ocean shores with scientists from Indonesia, Thailand, Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka, in part through UNESCO projects on the Makran Subduction Zone. He contributed to the public-safety booklets, “Surviving a tsunami—Lessons from Chile, Hawaii, and Japan,” and \"Where the first wave arrives in minutes—Indonesian lessons on surviving tsunamis near their sources.\" Brian was a Fulbright scholar in Indonesia and is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences
