Frank L. Bub joined the Navy as a ship’s engineer and converted specialty to oceanography after 4 years. His dissertation presented water mass development and movement of the North Brazil Current retroflection based on observations collected during four cruises. Frank remained at UNH as a research faculty, taught physical oceanography and conducted observation-based research projects in the Gulf of Maine. In 2000, he moved to a research fellow position at the School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) in New Bedford, part the University of Massachusetts system where his work centered on physical oceanography related to the cod fisheries. In 2002, Dr Bub rejoined the Navy community at the Naval Oceanographic Office as the ocean modeling technical lead. He liaises with the Naval Research Laboratory, conveys Navy requirements to R&D for ocean forecasts, and manages a number of important transitions to operations including the Navy Coastal Ocean Model (NCOM) and the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM). Frank coordinate operational requirements for large super-computing systems, overseeing and conducting evaluations of model transitions to ensure they meet Navy needs. Frank serves as NAVOCEANO point of contact for ocean modeling support of numerous events including the recent Gulf of Mexico oil spill and Fukushima radiation dispersion.
