Activities
My work has been focused on the development of methods
for the determination of heavy metals in environmental samples, with special
concern on marine organisms and sediment samples by Atomic Absorption
Spectrophotometry and X Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry. Also, I have been
working in the design and implementation of programs for monitoring chemical
pollutants and to study their bioavailability, transfer pathways and impact on
seafood of tropical marine environments. Special emphasis was made on the studies
of sediments as sinks of toxic contaminants, as well as the pollutant transfer
rates into food chains. A statistical interpretation based on combined datasets
including the measured concentration of toxic elements and the stable isotope
ratios has been used to assess the bio-magnification in the food chain. All
studies have addressed the risk assessment on environmental impact and on human
health due to food safety concerns.
