Course description
The 2022 Tsunami Community Preparedness Training Course is a continuation of the previous training (online-Basic Tsunami Ready Training Course). This training course provides the knowledge and skill to test the community's response capability. The course design will be like a Training of Trainers (ToT). Course contents will cover presentation, discussion, and sharing experiences on a case study of tsunami community preparedness and practical sessions including a site visit to a tsunami-ready community in Indonesia. The aim of the course is to strengthen the capacity of facilitators who are expected to provide assistance in building tsunami community preparedness, by practicing, evaluating, and reviewing the tsunami warning SOP in facilitating a close and effective collaboration among National Tsunami Warning Centers, and society in handling a major disaster.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this training, learners will be able to:
- Implement procedures needed to establish tsunami community preparedness in their country.
- Support the community to develop a tsunami community refer to the procedures.
- Support the community to complete the procedures.
- Support tsunami preparedness school.
Target Audience
The target audience includes, but is not limited to the following:
- Disaster management officer (national and local)
- Government agencies and non-government organizations (NGOs) working on disaster management field
- Researchers of tsunami science background
- Indicator 1: Have designated and mapped tsunami hazard zones
- Indicator 2: To develop an initial estimate of the number of people that live in the tsunami hazard zone.
- Indicator 3: Have a public display of tsunami information.
- Indicator 4: Develop an inventory of available economic, infrastructural, political, and social resources to reduce tsunami risk at the community level.
- Indicator 1: Produce easily understood tsunami evacuation maps as determined to be appropriate by local authorities in collaboration with communities.
- Indicator 2: Development and distribution of outreach and public education materials.
- Indicator 3: Hold at least three outreach or education activities annually.
- Indicator 4: Conduct a biennial tsunami community exercise.
- Indicator 1: Have a tsunami Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) for the community.
- Indicator 2: Have the capacity to manage emergency response operations during a tsunami.

Indicator 3: Have redundant and reliable means to receive 24-hour official tsunami alerts.Indicator 4: Have redundant and reliable means to disseminate 24-hour official tsunami alerts to the public.

Learner assessment
Assessment is based on
- Project presentation
- Pre-examination and post-examination
A certificate will be issued to participants who have completed 80% of the learning activities.
Course duration
The estimated time required to complete the course is 45 learning hours, within 6 days.
